The Ghetto Gourmet

Despite LA's strong art culture, the area lacks the love for the art of food compared to its northern California counterparts. Why?

That's a joke --right? If not: you just moved to LA --you're under 21?

If none of the above, you're serious: have you ever heard the word "foodie"? It was invented, here, in LA, by LA chefs --of restaurants doing the new, the fusion, the cutting edge, the superb, labeled People IN LA --who invested in --swarmed --talked about their places for the great new food --Made it Possible, which then expanded TO SF, across the country, NY and changed food, dinning, menus and cuisine, then changed EUROPE, mostly France; eventually transformed English fare, London, From what I call the 'beige & greasy' (diz-gusting) TO the edible.

Without LA diners, food-lovers: none of it would/could have happened --Here. SF was on a staid, stable same ol same ol track till LA got Hot and changed Every thing, everywhere. All started: here --over twenty years ago.

Before that to go out to dinner, here, meant: steak house, lobster house, Chasen's, Captain's Table, chop suey, MacDonald's, tacos, pizza joint, cafeteria food or nada. If you wanted anything beyond ketchup, s & p, few basic herbs from the grocery store: you had to leave the state, know somebody in Europe, grow your own or do without.

Passion for food hasn't dissipated, people IN Los Angeles still enjoy Good food, but we are: at the beginning, still, I think, of Change --we are starting to influence, the whole world, to entirely different menu. I've grown up/lived in SF and LA and SF's may Talk about food more, but in LA there's so Much More to talk about.

Hey Poppy-

I agree with you. There is a tremendous amount of eateries all over LA.

I'm an LA native, and I'm still finding out about stuff in LA. Los Angeles doesn't reveal itself all at once, you have to search it out. Be patient - if you're looking for something specific, ask around. Go out into the neighborhoods you wouldn't usually go to - SFV, SGV, So. Central, and yes - even the 909! You might be surprised at what you'll find.

No really, I think your statement is true. It's because Northern Californian are concerned with what they eat. Southern Californians are concerned with where they eat. Test it. Ask a SoCal person where they want to eat. Then ask why. Ten bucks says they tell you at some point in the next five minutes who has been spotted there.
I have had the lousiest food in some of the swankest places there. And I have done backflips for food in NorCal in some of the lousiest places. It's a higher bar.
