It's interesting how technology continues to challenge us in every sphere of our lives, and the culinary arts are no exception. The rise and popularity of "
molecular gastronomy" seems to have blown culinary doors wide open. Sure, I'm a fan of gramma's chicken n' dumplings, but some of my most memorable culinary experiences have been with foams and snows and steams and gelees.

The first MSP Ghetto Gourmet was a smash! We served a 5-course meal for 16 friends.
• Butternut squash and green apple soup with a curry/bell pepper garnish
• Pink lady apple cups with celeraic cherry slaw
• Argula salad with fennel, baked ricotta, and saffron
• Cassoulet (a French dish with white beans, tomatoes, lamb, duck, and sausage)
• Pots of chocolate with orange polenta cookies

Allow me to get literary for a minute, OK?
Whenever I get ready to throw a party, I can't help but think of Virgina Woolf's famous first line: "Mrs. Dalloway said she would buy the flowers herself." She was a privileged woman, after all, but she insists on no servants, thank you, and no ride to the flower shop. She was throwing a party that night, and more than anything, SHE wanted to go walk through the streets of London to pick up the flowers herself.
En route, she falls in madly love with e…

Dear friends,
The Ghetto Girls are your friends Angela and Carrie, and this is an invitation to our new social dining project.
A few months ago, daydreaming about finding new outlets for creativity, we realized we were having similar ideas. At the same time Carrie was imagining casual conversation featuring classic dishes for good friends, Angela was testing recipes to gain enough experience to moonlight as a caterer one day.
Together, we’d like to feed our daydreams and do the things we love…

It is the crack of dawn(almost) and today, I am working to bring a
little Provence into Mission. Provence is where friendship is expressed at the table with food and wine. Under a canopy of trees, bread is broken and the wine flows. The food is hearty and assertive. This isnt squiggledy doodle food. Food wont be smeared or painted. It will however speak to you and if you listen very carefully, it will sing to you in a melody that has revibrated…

The gold standard of boozy prunes is Pruneaux a l'Armagnac where the plump Prunes d'Agen(that will set you back at least 2 bucks a prune!) steeped in Armagnac(it has its own snifter..I will stop now or this post will be creeping in directions i cant afford). About a year ago, I delivered my first Ghetto Gourmet dinner to celebrate the birthday of a beautiful lady's at her San Francisco home. Dinner was served in their backyard patio that opened up to the cool summer skies. It was a beautiful day with temperatures crossing the 80s and after sundown, the weather became soothingly cooler.
Vera had decorated the little space to seat and feed 30 diners. She and her team descended with their tables, lamps, dinnerware and everything else that was required.…

We received an email over the previous weekend about a last-minute wine dinner with Stephen Derenencourt, a consultant from Bordeaux. The dinner was five courses and 14 wines. It was fabulous overall, but the best part was sitting across from a couple that shared our love of Burgundy. They provided us with a contact in the region to order wine directly for shipment to Chicago; I'm going to start getting my order together this weekend.

"For those of us that take eating, particularly cheese eating, seriously, information is ammunition in the battle against tastelessness.
