One of the pioneers in the underground restaurant movement and an early inspiration for Joe and I to start the Ghetto Gourmet dinners, Dig's Bistro has made the leap into a proper and legitimate space at 1453 Dwight Way in Berkeley, from "Oakland Underground Speakeasy to Elegant East Bay Bistro". Two of my favorite restaurants were in that space, and i couldn't be more happy for jesse and the gang. i can't wait to get back out to oakland and make a visit. and neither should you. go visit justin, heidi and jeese and tell hello from the ghet.

"Justin Sconce, former sous chef at Rivoli in Berkeley, and Heidi DiPippo, a onetime chef at Yankee Pier in Larkspur, will open it Oct. 15 as Digs Bistro.
Sconce and DiPippo have worked together before - running an underground restaurant in an old Craftsman house in Oakland. One weekend a month the chefs and Jesse Kupers, who has part ownership in Digs Bistro and will run the front of the house, would serve a five-course, fixed-price menu to 80 diners. Word of the
dinners spread, and soon they were booked weeks in advance.
But neighbors blew the whistle, and the stealth supper club was shut down for permit violation."
