Hello my name is Alexandrea and I am a coffee addict.
It's true - I have given it up several times over the years, but I keep going back. My friend (and partner in crime) and I decided to review some of our favorite spots in NYC for a solid cup a joe.
Here are some of our favorites - hope you find the buzz just as satisfying as we have :)
Chez Betty
252 E 3rd Stree

By American standards Madame Betty may seem like she is all business. But regardless of whether or not she makes you feel warm and fuzzy, she knows good coffee. Particularly iced coffee. Full bodied, while at the same time subtle and light, with a rich penetrating flavor. A glass of this in the summer refreshes and revitalizes ones senses, leaving you ready to tackle the rest of what the LES has to offer.

The Grey Dog
90 University Place, New York
A cozy cafe just off of Union Square (they have other locations in the village etc. but I haven't tried them yet). One would think that Starbucks has no business the way this place is buzzing (and let's hope they don't). They offer food and beverages of all types and from what I've tried it is all good. The coffee is wonderful - and nicely packaged in a chic to go cup (pic above). Flavorful, rich and not at all bitter - this brew is beautiful :) They make their own blends and if you fall in love you can buy the stuff by the pound and even online from their website. Drink local - try a cup from The Grey Dog the next time you're in Union Square.

Gizzie's Coffee16 West 8th Street
New York, NY 10011-9002
(212) 260-9700
Or in this case NYC worst coffee. I'm sorry, but it has to be said. The guy who got me the coffee did so as if I had just asked him to do my taxes. And quantity does not equal quality at $2.25 for a large I still feel like I would like at least $3 back for my exprience and time wasted.
Skip this "coffee" shop.

Crumbs Bake Shop
37 East 8th St (University/Broadway)
New York, NY 10003

Ok so this place is a chain and I don't know if the coffee is the same at all of them, but the one on 8th leaves something to be desired...like coffee. It was watery and flavorless. Sadly it seems that finding coffee near the students of NYU is a bit difficult. One would think that the necessary caffine buzz would be easier to find near such a large university. Perhaps we haven't hunted enough yet...
On a happier note, I did love the colorful cupcakes they had at this bakery. My favorite at least for color (the name is misleading as it is actually strawberry and lime flavored) is the Cosmo.
Here's a pic I snagged on my cell:
